The History of the Wedding Cake
During the days of the Roman Empire, a wedding cake was broken over
the head of the new bride by her groom. Guests would then scramble for
pieces of the cake and take them home for good luck. That tradition has
been replaced by the groom's cake - already wrapped in small pieces so
no need to break it over the bride's head!
The roots of our modern-day stacked wedding
cake reach back to a time when friends, relatives and neighbors each
brought lovingly made cakes to the wedding. There they were stacked one
on top of the other, creating a symbol of love, generosity and unity.
